Exploring Workforce Development with MidAmerican Energy and DMACC

In Session 203, “MidAmerican Energy Tackles Workforce Development with AR and Multimodal Training,” Index collaborated with MidAmerican Energy Company and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) to present a case study demonstrating how multimodal training – combining augmented reality (AR), interactive eBooks, and 3D models – can accelerate learning and improve job readiness for lineworker careers.

The presentation described how the team designed and implemented a scalable training model built around immersive learning experiences. It highlighted how layering AR, interactive content, and 3D visualization enhances engagement and strengthens retention, while also documenting measurable improvements in trainee preparedness, confidence, and performance.

Stephen Simmons presenting at T&D World LiveIndex’s Cam Fleming, MidAmerican’s Stephen Simmons and DMACC’s Don Finn outlined best practices for integrating immersive technology into existing training programs and shared strategies to overcome common challenges associated with implementation.

The trio conducted live demos with audience volunteers who got an opportunity to experience the power of several of the Index training applications firsthand, including Knot Tying, Transformer Trainer and Load Lifting. The multimodal content embedded in the training solutions shown on stage pairs immersive technology with hands-on learning, helping students grasp complex concepts and practice in a safe environment.

The session resonated with attendees who are seeking proven approaches to address workforce shortages while enhancing safety, skill development, and knowledge transfer across utility operations.
